How have you been feeling lately?

A question that needs to be asked a lot more, especially coming out of lockdown. It’s so normal to get overwhelmed at the moment. During lockdown we weren’t able to do a lot therefore returning to work and balancing your social life can be a challenge. Last week I felt excited to be returning to work because I was able to get back into a routine and see my co-workers. However I also had moments of feeling overwhelmed and anxious at the same time. After my first week of work I decided to end the week by booking in a self care afternoon. This then gave me something to look forward to at the end of the week. I came out after the one hour session feeling relaxed and clear headed with how I would tackle the next week.

This a reminder that it’s ok to not feel ok. Yes we’ve returned to a somewhat normal life but that doesn’t mean you have to instantly feel better. Adjusting to change can be hard and feel uncomfortable but just recognise the small wins you have daily.

These are some ideas to help you cope during these next few weeks/months returning to normal life after lockdown:

  • It can be helpful to remind yourself a period of readjustment is normal and any distress is generally temporary so set yourself realistic goals

  • Talk to supportive friends and let them know how you’re feeling. Surrounding yourself with a supportive group can relieve some stress and not make you feel as alone

  • Re-engage with fun. I definitely missed going out for dinner, laughing with my friends and celebrating people’s birthday’s. Just remember that it’ll only get easier the more you do it. So just take small steps when re-entering social situations

  • Stay in the moment. Always focus on how you feel in this present moment. I love the saying “if it’s a half arsed yes then it’s a definite no”. Trust your intuition and what your mind and body is telling you

Lastly remember to be patient with yourself during this time
